The Chief's Bark
12 April 2006
Woof Bark to all;
I have just returned from the SED Conference in Myrtle Beach, SC. I wanted to take a moment and let you know some after action thoughts I have based upon my observations and discussions with some great dogs in Dogdom. First, let me congratulate the SE Division Vice Chief Devil Dog and the Pack Leader of the SC Pack. The Growl was a good growl and it was evident that the memories of last year resulted in a conscious effort to make sure the event was conducted IAW our By Laws, Ritual and Administrative Procedures. I would have liked to recognize more dogs but I want to make sure that every dog understands that the Chief Devil Dog’s challenge coin can not be purchased, bought or otherwise given away. I make an effort to bring a few with me during every trip so I can recognize a few outstanding Dogs. I know the Division Vice Chief Devil Dog and the Pack Leader will make sure those deserving recognition get recognized for their efforts. While at the Growl, I had the honor of bestowing the HONORARY degree of Honorary Pedigree Devil Dog to one of our Marine Corps Hero’s, Col Fox (MOH Recipient). It was an Honor for me and the SC Pack to have him attend the Growl and I could tell he was having a good time.
Now for some observations. First, I was concerned that we had a Devil Dog Pup walk out of the Growl when some advancements were made to DD. I asked to track him down so I could talk with him and find out the problem. Well, here it is….can you believe the Pack Leader received information from the Division Vice Chief Devil Dog in advance of the Growl and had instructions to make sure any dogs advancing had their paperwork in the hands of the SC Pack Dog Robber via the Division and the word was not passed down to the dogs attending from the Pack and as a result, fur was standing on the backside. I can only say this, I hope this does not happen again. Pack Leaders are vital to the success of the Order and I instruct each Division Vice to meet face to face with the Pack Leaders prior to the Supreme Growl, preferably before 1 May to make sure the word is getting down to the Pounds.
I will not mention names but I will say that at the next Quarterly meeting of the Department of Florida, the Pack should take great effort to advance Pup Paul Davis if he is in fact qualified to advance to DD. This means not waiting for the paperwork to show up on the doorstep. Contact the respective Pound for Cross City Florida and make sure the paperwork is in place to advance him at the mini growl of the Pack (since I know there will be one).
Next, there was not enough attention paid the Pups that attended the Growl. In fact, two Pups told me they felt left out. At one point, they were told to stand and so they did. After about 5 or six minutes, since no one was barking at them growl was too busy with the PDD’s and the DD’s, one spoke up and the next thing you know they were recognized and told to sit. For the next 20 minutes or so, they sat, no one barking at them or with them. My attention was taken away but I am not sure if they even participated in any other tail wagging or barking after that. Let’s keep our up and coming Pups busy because as this may come as a surprise, they want to participate in the “Fun” part too.
There were several questions again, as we get closer to the cut off for the advancement paperwork to be in the hands of the HKDR, about showing up on Tuesday (we all know that means at 1700 or later) Tuesday. While I want every Dog to have an opportunity to Advance, like the challenge coin, the PDD is not given, it is earned. Pack Leaders, talk with the Pound Keepers and make sure the Dogs wishing to advance have the appropriate stamps in their passport and a chronological record (can be placed in the back of the passport) of their involvement in Pound and Pack functions. Needless to say, if a dog shows up with one stamp in his/her passport and it is the one for the Supreme Growl they are attending, how can any one at the Supreme Growl on the Kennel Staff justify “awarding” or advancing the Dog to Pedigree. It is not rocket science. Every Pound is supposed to have growls, every Pack has them. If there is a function of the parent MCL Det, and they help out (bingo for nursing homes, Vet Hospital activities, funeral details, color guards..etc) there should be some notation made in the back of their passport.
We still need to get to the Packs and Pounds our need for them to comply with the By Laws and send in those passport Bones, installation reports and dues for delinquent members. Make the effort to get to those dogs that are not making growls lately and take care of our own by getting them there so they can participate.
In my travels I have had the opportunity to hear several sides to situations that appear to personality conflict driven. Let me remind all Dogs, we are here for the Pups, and DD’s. They are the future success of the Kennel. Let’s put aside the “I don’t want to’s", "I don’t think so’s", "I want it done this way" arguments and remember, we are all a part of a bigger team that is bigger than ourselves. Think of doing what is right for the Pound, Pack or Kennel, not what is what the “I’s” think is right for the “me’s”.
O.K…..I got that off my chest, and some fur fell off because of it but now I want to tell you all, we are making forward progress however, let’s not take our eyes off the prize, the good of the community, and the order. Keep in mind our members in harms way, with medical needs, or with circumstances that have prevented them from attending and participating in the camaraderie.
S/Bark;
Don Garland
